Scholem Aleichem: a paz seja convosco!

Resumo

A obra de Scholem Aleichem não foi exceção no destino que a riquíssima ficção iídiche teve com o desaparecimento dos grandes centros da cultura asquenasita na Europa Oriental e a sua consequente aculturação aos países para onde emigraram. Se o destino dos “clássicos” da literatura iídiche foi restringir-se às bibliotecas especializadas e às consultas acadêmicas, o da obra de Scholem Aleichem foi, uma vez desaparecidos seus primeiros leitores, restringir-se a não mais que contatos eventuais no idioma original ou a traduções parciais. Sua popularização deu-se com o musical O violinista no telhado, adaptado de sua novela Tevie, der Milkhiker. O imaginário ficcional de sua obra inspira-se no mundo de criaturas dos shtetlech, cidadezinhas judaicas nos interiores do Império Russo, compondo um retrato coletivo, uma crônica literária dessas pequenas cidades do Leste Europeu e dos judeus que nelas viviam. E tudo isto com o traço fino da sua veia humorística, esta risonha terapêutica que se suavisa na qualidade poética. Autor de contos e novelas imortais, deixa um legado que transpõe as fronteiras do iídiche, tornando-se não só um clássico da literatura nesta língua, mas um “herói cultural” dos judeus asquenasitas.

Scholem Aleichem: may peace be with you! - Abstract: Scholem Aleichem’s work was not an exception in the fate which took the rich Yiddish fiction after the disappearance of the major centers of Ashkenazi culture in East Europe and its further acculturation in the countries they emigrated to. If the destiny of the “classics” of Yiddish literature was to become restricted to specialized libraries and academic researches, Scholem Aleichem’s work’s one was, once disappeared his first readers, to become restricted to either eventual contacts in its original language or partial translations. Its popularization came with the musical Fiddler on the roof, adapted from his novella Tevie, der Milkhiker. The fictional imaginary of his work is inspired in the world of the characters of the shtetlekh, small Jewish towns in the Russian Empire, composing a collective portrait, a literary chronicle of these small towns in East Europe and the Jews who lived in there. He did this with the fine account of his humoristic vein, this therapeutic laugh which is softened in the poetic quality. Author of immortal short stories and novellas, Scholem Aleichem leaves a legacy that transposed the frontiers of Yiddish literature and becomes not only a classic of the literature in this language but also a “cultural hero” of Ashkenazi Jews.
