Influência da Stevia rebaudiana na saúde bucal – revisão de literatura

Resumo

Introdução: A Stevia rebaudiana é uma planta nativa da América do Sul, da qual é extraída a stevia , um adoçante natural não calórico com potencial adoçante maior do que a sacarose, sem efeitos adversos e que tem demonstrado possuir muitos benefícios para a saúde sistêmica e, mais recentemente, para a saúde oral. O objetivo da presente revisão de literatura é apresentar os benefícios da Stevia como importante opção para substituição do uso da sacarose e dos adoçantes artificiais, principalmente no que se refere a saúde bucal. Discussão: Os estudos sobre a Stevia contribuem com importantes informações a respeito do potencial papel anticariogênico e antimicrobiano, oriundo de sua capacidade de reduzir a carga bacteriana, a formação de biofilme, evitando altas diminuições de pH e atuando como um agente anti-inflamatório. A Stevia pode se tornar um complemento aos cuidados de saúde bucal na forma de bochechos, cremes dentais, goma de mascar, saliva artificial, comprimidos mastigáveis, além de seu efeito benéfico para a saúde em geral, principalmente em paciente com obesidade, diabetes e hipertensão. Conclusão: Dessa forma, a Stevia apresenta vantagens quando comparada a outros adoçantes artificiais, além de ser uma excelente opção para substituir a sacarose.
