Abstract

We propose to analyze here the course of plays written by Henri Rousseau, French artist self-taught at the turn of the twentieth century, from its conception and transmission to the possible contributions it brought to the dramatic genre in modernity and the relations that maintain with the pictorial production of the Douanier, as it is best known. Dating respectively from 1889, 1899 and sometime between 1905-1910 but published only decades later, the vaudeville Une Visite à l'Exposition de 1889, the drama La Vengeance d'une orpheline russe and the comedy L'Étudiant en goguette witness an effort of creation in a language other than painting, which the artist was accustomed. The main challenge and also the main objective of a study that deals with the written production of Rousseau is therefore to inscribe it in the historical line of the dramatic genre, in the sense of apprehending its characteristics and the way in which they are articulated to the context of its time.
ER -
