The story is the first appearance of Nathan Zuckerman, the author’s literary alterego and is about the conflicts of the young Jewish author with his community, his family and the representation of Jewish life in the post- World War II period. The Holocaust emerges as a rupture point, a piece of his own history which the writer must appropriate and understand.
