Reason and faith in Maimonides - Abstract: This paper analyzes the relation between reason and faith in Maimonides. Our analysis is builded upon the standpoint of two philosophical questions that receive from the philosopher/theologian Maimonides a treatment based on the philosophy of Aristotle, namely, the question concerning different ways of conveying Jewish tradition and the question concerning the eternity of the world. The first question consists in how to keep uniformity in the transmission of the commandments of Judaism without eliminating an essential feature of such a transmission, its orality. This tension between modes of preservation of the rabbinic tradition shows itself in the tension between human finitude and the sacred content of the scriptures and its source in divine nature. Such a difficulty invokes the necessity of using a language composed by metaphors, allegories and homonymous terms in order to communicate the ideas contained in the Torah. Maimonides gives an account of that question in his philosophical work, The Guide for the Perplexed, by analyzing expressions employed to refer to God. The second question is how to conciliate the Aristotelian idea of the eternity of the world, according to which the world has neither a begging nor an end, with the idea of Creation. Based on the treatment presented by the philosopher to both questions, we indicate a conception of reason as a tool for the comprehension of the faith’s object, leading to the conclusion that there is a subordination of the latter to the former even in a philosophical context, the context of essentially rational activity.
