Honor and the statutes of purity of blood in Brazilian colonial society - Abstract: Through the analysis of the processes of enabling relating the clergy of Brazil to the position of commissioner of the Inquisition, this article evaluates the penetration of the statutes of purity of blood (“estatutos de pureza de sangue”) in colonial society. The aim is to verify, first, the appropriations that were made of qualifications which adopted this discriminatory criterion and then investigate whether the end of the separation of society between Old Christians and New Christians under the law took effect in practical reality for the years following the decree of 1773.
