Charles Ephrussi, Isaak Babel e Hermann Broch: three emblematic destinies for the failure of the “ethical-aesthetical education of man” - Abstract: This article is about the traps and illusions involving Schiller’s idea of aesthetic education in the period between 1900 and 1945. During this half century, the tensions produced by increasing social and political complexity will deny the promises of the German idea of humanistic culture dignified by Goethe, Schiller and Humboldt. The illusions involving this ideal proved particularly catastrophic for Jewish communities, families and individuals, who had understood Humanism as a guarantee for assimilation. Three cases from very diverse contexts (France, Russia/Sowiet Union, Austria) will illustrate this unfortunate shipwreck of a grand ideal: the Ephrussi family, Isaak Babel and Hermann Broch.
