The signifier “Israel” in the novels of Moacyr Scliar: the battle for Jerusalem in a port street in Brazil - Abstract: Israel tends to be only tangentially present in Jewish Latin American fiction; while it is almost never where the story takes place, it may appear as an evoked signifier, denoting a great variety of meanings that can be represented as an interaction between its temporal and spatial dimensions, projecting different symbolic orders. This work examines the presence of Israel in Moacyr Scliar’s autobiographical novel The Volunteers (1979) as an element that plays a role in the construction of Jewish identity and in the configuration of the story. It also analyzes different representations of this signifier in the novel, whose enunciation articulates otherness and difference, explores memory, and questions the idea of nation.
