Wedding in a Township: a study on the a esthetic transformation of the ritual

Abstract

This article is centered in a marriage between isiZulu speakers in the township of Thokosa, South Africa. Meanwhile, the circumscription to an only one place is defied according to the connections maintained with rural areas – the original land –, and according to the moves to another neighboring township – triggered by the rituals that make up the party and put in relation the future relatives. From the theoretical perspective of Mbembe and Nuttall – that seeks to open space for the perception of how African modernity is experienced in an original way –, this article focuses on the aesthetic, spatial and animal transformations to demonstrate the subversion of forms imposed by the spatial and racial segregation and the migration.
