Guerra. Irracionalidade. Destruição. Abstract: Since the beginning of writing, there are registers of conflicts among human be-ings for the dispute of territories, through vengeance and demonstration of power. Long ago, a people subdued another by the hand-to-hand combat brutality, with the use of lethal and heavy weapons. In his writings, Freud states that fight and competition are both parts of man and, if used for good, they boost the material progress; however, the scientific development, which decreases the pains of the body and the distance among countries today, is also capable of annihilating in minutes what armies would take months to conquer. The world literature skillfully registers the most variable combats, reinforcing the idea that human brutality supersedes the irrationality of animals. This text visits several works which depicted intern and world combats, unhappy moments of the human history, revealing that the age, the place and the reason are not important; someone will always defeat others, even if its result is death, oppression, hunger, suffering and ruin. Keywords: Literature. War. Irrationality. Destruction.
